spa treatment

A spa is a place where you can get a varied range of health and beauty body treatments to relax and rejuvenate yourself. The term spa is derived from the Latin phrase: “solus per aqua” which means health through water. It’s basic theory being that water, as a major source of life, can be used to heal the body as well as mental fatigue.

Types of Spas

Health spas deal with overall body and mind treatments, whereas medical spas offer various cosmetic body treatments. Destination spas offer you cultural or environmental adventures, along with the resort’s day spa facilities for manicures and pedicures and other body treatments. Natural Spas using natural mineral water or springs are also very popular and have existed for thousands of years.

Types of Spa Treatments
There are a number of body spa treatments that vary based on the time duration, medium used and the purpose served. The most basic treatments are massage and sauna, which have prevailed for centuries. At most spas, you can also have facials or full body treatments like skin scrubs, where your entire body is rubbed with a scrubbing solution to remove dead skin and cells or special body wraps, which require you to lie wrapped in leaves or cloth, which contain healing herbal ingredients. Some spas also offer Thai massage, hot stone massage and reflexology.

Ayurvedic Spas and Treatments
Ayurvedic apas and treatments are becoming more widely available. According to Dr. Marc Halpern president and founder of the California College of Ayurveda, “Ayurveda is the most complete form of holistic medicine practiced in the world today.” This 5,000-year-old Indian medicine is a mind-body healing system that brings you in perfect balance, creating stability and wellness. There are many types of Ayurvedic treatments and techniques and like other spa treatments, Ayurvedic treatments are often proprietary. The Panchakarma style of Ayurvedic treatment detoxifies the body and dramatically stimulates the immune system. Rasayana is another Ayurvedic treatment technique through which the body is calmed by releasing emotional tension and physical discomfort. Your spa specialist will suggest the best treatment for you based on your body type, lifestyle and health condition.

Preparation
Always arrive at least 15 minutes early for your spa treatment. That way, you can change your robes and then relax for an optimum experience. If your spa provides sauna, steam baths or a hot tub, make it a point to arrive even earlier so you can use these services before your treatment. Certain treatments like massages work better the more relaxed you are to begin with.

Benefits
Beside the fact that you can look and feel fantastic afterward, be more relaxed and rejuvenated, spa body treatments can also help improve circulation and metabolism by removing toxic substances from the body, toning the muscles and oxygenating the skin and joints. Massages also help normalize blood pressure levels, help the digestive system and enhance your mood. Janet Law, owner of Isabelle’s Day Spa says that you have more energy and lose weight more easily from the stimulation of your circulation and increase of your metabolism, offered by a wrap.
